What is an Ectopic Pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants and begins to develop outside the uterus, typically in one of the fallopian tubes. Symptoms include vaginal bleeding, uncomfortable toileting, stomach pain, and pain at the shoulder’s tip. This condition is not viable and can pose health risks to the mother if left untreated; prompt medical attention is required.
What is a Miscarriage?
A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy before the foetus can survive outside the womb, typically occurring within the first 20 weeks of gestation. Vaginal bleeding and pain in the lower stomach can indicate a miscarriage, and women should seek immediate medical attention if experiencing such symptoms.
Treatment and Support
An ectopic pregnancy can be diagnosed using an ultrasound and blood tests. After diagnosis, early ectopic pregnancies may be treated using injected medication to dissolve cells and prevent growth. Dr Hankins can also perform laparoscopic surgeries to remove the pregnancy in more progressed cases. Emergency surgery may be required if heavy bleeding is experienced.
Miscarriages can be diagnosed through blood tests, ultrasounds, pelvic exams, or other medical tests. If Dr Hankins identifies that you have miscarried or will miscarry, she can help you navigate your next steps with empathy and compassionate guidance. You may wish to let the miscarriage process naturally, consume medication to aid tissue passing, or have a minor suction dilation and curettage surgery for tissue removal.
