Loop and Cone Biopsy for Cervical Dysplasia

Loop & Cone Biopsy for Cervical Dysplasia

Dr Kelly Hankins provides precise diagnostic and treatment services for individuals with abnormal cervical screening results. Early intervention and personalised care are at the core of Dr Hankins’ approach, and she provides loop and cone biopsies for optimal outcomes.

Understanding Cervical Dysplasia

Cervical dysplasia refers to the presence of abnormal, precancerous changes in the cells of the cervix, often detected through Pap smears or HPV testing. It is not cancer itself but signifies a heightened risk of developing cervical cancer if left untreated. Early detection and appropriate management are crucial to prevent the progression to cervical cancer.

Dr Kelly Hankins offers early detection and treatment through loop and cone biopsies.

Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ)

LLETZ is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove abnormal cervical tissue. It involves the use of a fine wire loop and an electrical current to precisely excise the affected area. By removing cells and allowing for their examination, LLETZ is effective in both diagnosing and treating cervical dysplasia.

Cone Biopsy (Conisation)

Cone biopsy involves the removal of a cone-shaped piece of cervical tissue containing the abnormal cells. This procedure is typically recommended when more extensive tissue sampling or treatment is necessary. It may be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the biopsy.

Your Next Steps After Biopsy

Following a loop or cone biopsy, the excised tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory for examination to determine the extent of cervical dysplasia. Dr Hankins will discuss the pathology results and provide guidance on further treatment, if necessary. Regular follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor your cervical health.

If the biopsy results indicate the presence of more advanced dysplasia or precancerous cells, Dr Hankins may recommend additional interventions to prevent the progression to cervical cancer.
