Treatment of Endometriosis

Treatment of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a complex and often painful gynaecological condition that affects 1 out of 10 reproductive-aged women in Australia. Dr Kelly Hankins is committed to helping women find relief and improve quality of life, and provides comprehensive treatment options for women suffering from endometriosis.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition where tissue that usually lines the uterus (endometrium) grows on other pelvic structures. During each menstrual cycle, the cells respond to hormonal changes, leading to inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue.

Common Symptoms

Endometriosis presents a wide range of symptoms which can vary in severity. Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
  • Painful intercourse
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Infertility
  • Painful bowel movements or urination

Causes of Endometriosis

The exact cause of endometriosis remains unknown; however, retrograde menstruation and a family history of endometriosis are often associated with this condition.

Diagnosis of Endometriosis

Endometriosis diagnoses often require more than one assessment. Depending on the patient’s medical history and symptoms, testing may include:

  • Laparoscopy
  • Ultrasound
  • Colonoscopy
  • Pelvic examination

Treatment Options

While endometriosis is a chronic condition and, therefore, cannot be “cured”, its symptoms can be eased. There are numerous tailored treatment options available to improve quality of life, including:

  • Lifestyle changes: Targeted diet and exercise can relieve some endometriosis symptoms.
  • Medications: Pain relievers, hormonal therapy, and birth control methods can manage pain and control the progression of endometriosis.
  • Laparoscopic surgery: This is a minimally invasive surgery that removes endometrial cells while preserving healthy tissue.
  • Hysterectomy: In severe cases, a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be recommended, sometimes alongside the removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes.
